Umbrella White

In photography, what is the difference in using the white umbrella light and the black umbrella light?
I have been shooting armature photography for a few years now. I received a nice set of lighting as a gift, but have no idea how to use the lights. I received one black, and one white umbrella. Can you tell me which is best for what photos?
They pretty much do the same thing - spread the light over a larger area -- diffusing it. White, you can actually shoot through. Black, you shoot into and the light bounses off. Google or youtube basic umbrella setups and you'll learn what to do with them. They are really good for portraits. Have fun!
