Portrait and fashion photographers! What is your favorite soft box/ umbrella light?

I'm a college student looking to invest in my first professional photography light. I'm leaning towards soft box but not sure which type to buy. What would you suggest? Small, octagonal, large square? Please let me know a specific type/company name and a link if you can. If you're anti soft box, tell me why and tell me what you would suggest.
I am a portrait photographer but do enjoy some fashion portraits. I was thinking of a small soft box for the edgy shadows. Let me know what you use.

It all depends on what affect you are trying to achieve. The larger the light source the softer the shadows. Softboxes control spill more than umbrellas. Gridded softboxes even more so.

I use a 24" softbox and a 33" umbrella for work with speedlights, I also have a 60" umbrella and a huge 6' stripbox with a egg crate grid that I use with studio monoblocs.
