Tungsten Continuous

Studio Lighting - is flash enough?
I've been using a Nikon D60 to shoot indoors with 3 tungsten continuous lights.. each at 500 watts. It seems not to be enough light.
I am considering getting an external flash. My question is...
If I purchase an external flash do I still need to purchase additional equipment such as strobe lighting or will the external flash be enough?
I am working with a budget of 1,000.
Sorry for asking, but are you sure your halogen (tungsten) lights are each 500 watts on there own, or is that 500 total wattage for all 3 combined?? I'm just asking because 1500 watts should provide you with a considerably powerful lighting source. You can get a quality halogen lighting kit with 3,000 watts total for around 600 or so. If your happy with the tungsten lighting you have already, you could get a pro 500 watt flash light for right around 400 which is generally enough flash lighting for a large professional set.
