Studio Monolight
In a monolight howmany watt seconds are right for my use?
Ok I am an amature with a lot of experience. I have a small space I shoot studio type photography. I purchased some really cheap lights on ebay a few years ago to see if I would actually use them and I do. I would now like to purchase better lights. I have decided on monolights with stepless power from 1/8 to full. My question is what Watt second I need for my purposes. I have room for lights anywhere from 6-10 feet from the distance of my subject(usually my kids)or closer. With such a small space would a smaller WS be eficient say 150ws-300ws? Or do I need the mid WS 400-600ws. I just need some experiencd photo lighting advice.
I am just taking pictures of my kids I am using a canon xti digital and a 60mm f2.8. I would like somthing that I can use for family portraits also.
From what you describe I would consider regular Canon shoe-mount flashes. They are strong enough for indoor portraits and much more portable than monolights. You can buy standard mounts to set them on light stands that hold other accessories (e.g. fire into umbrella or soft box). You can also play with less expensive flash modifiers.
I get by with a choice of Nikon speedlight (and slave flashes) or hot lights (photo floods). Hot lights are harder on your subjects but dirt simple to set up (continuous light).
Anyway, given your short distances and large apertures your needs are on the low end of the spectrum. Check out Alien Bees for inexpensive but well-regarded monolights.
