Correct way of closing a studio strobe?

I've read an article online about the correct way of closing a strobe awhile ago, but can't find the article anymore..

I don't know about the Elinchrom as I have an older Ascor QC1000. It's quite a unit and is very under-rated. I run 2 to 4 heads most times and have to use 3-4 stops neutral density to shoot at f16-22 (at 100 ISO.) So, let's just say there is plenty of power in the capacitors.

The way that I shut down is to turn the unit off using the off switch. The very instant the off switch is pressed I also press the "flash" switch which allows me to hand-fire the unit. This drains the capacitors. And, of course shuts the unit off.

At that point, I can unplug the heads. Not before!

I learned this the hard way back in 1965 when I was a lowly photo assistant in NYC. I turned off a power-pack, didn't drain the capacitors, and was thrown halfway across the room when I pulled one of the plugs from one of the heads.

Good thing I was young and had a strong heart!

I never messed up that one again.
