Standard Lenses

i currently own and use a canon eos rebel xs with the standard lenses that they offer.?
i'm getting more into photography and was wondering what type of lense should i start using now? for portraits, nature, etc.
There are two EOS Rebel XS cameras. One is a film camera and the other is a digital. It's confusing I know.
For portraits a focal range from 50-120mm is considered a portrait lens. Having a wide aperture is desirable for those out of focus backgrounds. The cheapest lens in this category is the 50mm f/1.8, however this is also the widest that you'd technically want to go. I say technically because you just may not have enough room to back up enough to use a 50mm lens. Not everyone has an 80 foot deep studio at their disposal.
The Canon 24-70 f/2.8 is a great bread and butter kind of lens. It fits the bill for so many uses. It's within the "normal" range meaning what you see is what you capture. f/2.8 is a decent aperture (1.8 is better but they don't make that in a zoom). Event photogs swear by this lens.
There's also the 105 macro. Macro, among other things, lets you get up close to your subject.
The longer your focal length of your lens the skinnier your model will appear.

For nature, that can be anywhere from the 24-70 if you want to take pics of flowers, a 10-22 if you want to get wide landscapes, or a 500mm lens for getting closeups of birds. There really isn't even a focal range, it's all over the place.

Which kit lens do you have. There was the 28-80, 35-80, 28-135 IS, 18-55, and 18-55 IS.
