My Britek PS 300H studio flash only fires sometimes with my Nikon D40?

I bought a Britek PS 300H studio flash to use with my nikon d40. I use the sync cord with the hot shoe adapter. In a test on approximately 30 shots, the flash went off 8 times, the next 6 photos no flash, next 1 flash, next 15 or so no flash.
My Nikon D40 is set to shoot on manual, shutter speed 250 (or 125), apature (f-number) 9. I also see +/- [r12].
I also have a cheaper JTL S-25M slave flash. When I test approximately 30 shots using the exact same method (hot shoe apapter and sync cord), the flash fired 100% of the time, therefore all the photos were fine.
I need to use my Britek PS 300H flash with my softbox.
HELP !!

Gee, If I had your problem, I would be in a quandary as to what was wrong. And I too would test another flash with my camera. And If I found the second flash working perfectly, I would call the Britek people. Sorry I don't have their number, but I bet you do in your documentation.
