Scenic Background

When buying portraits do you look for scenic backgrounds, solid backgrounds, or abstract backgrounds?

What is your prefrence for your family pictures or for your modeling portfolio?

Well..I take more portraits than I buy, but I much prefer clean backgrounds maybe with a subtle gradient like this:
