Why is candlelight considered soft light?

I'm looking for an answer that's appropriate for a chemistry lab write up. Like something to do with wavelength ranges for example.
Thanks!

Soft light is more of a perception than an absolute and is probably more suited to a physics write up than a chemistry one. 'Soft' light is that perceived in a situation in which it (the light) appears to 'blur' the edges of objects seen therein and cause them to appear softer. The nearer the light source is to an object, the softer it will seem. The larger, or more diffuse, the light source then the softer it will appear. This is why candlelight may be consideed soft - it's a fairly diffuse light and often has to be near an object to illuminate it.

Now, if you're talking about hard and soft X-rays, that's a different kettle of fish.
