Hot Shoe

Are hot shoe flashes for DSLRs universal?
Like, is there a company that makes hot shoe flashes for all brands. I'm looking for a cheap bounce flash for a canon XSI (450D) under $100. Also are there bounce adapters? Like that can tilt a regular flash towards the ceiling? THANKS
For your price range the best you can do is the Vivitar 285HV. NOTE: Its the 285HV, NOT the old original 285. The original 285 would likely fry the electronics in your XSi so make sure its the 285HV. $89.95 at B&H for the 285HV. http://www.bhphotovideo.com
You'll have to go "old school" with the 285HV - set the ISO on the flash and then choose an f-stop from the dial on the side of the flash and that will give you a maximum distance and then set that f-stop on your lens and pay attention to the subject distance. Its really easier than it sounds. You can read a review of the 285HV at:
