olympus e410 flash question?

okay so i got the olympus e410 for christmas, my first SLR which is great but how come the flash flashes like five times before taking the photo. It happens when the flash is on auto, i know its supposed to do it for red eye reduction. I thought it was broken and i nearly died, anyone know whats wrong with it?

It is not for redeye.
It is because Olympus doesn't have an autofocus assist lamp.
This is on all of their cameras.
So with the flash up, it will flash a few times to lock in focus.

When you use an external flash like the fl36 of fl50 it has an autofocus assist lamp built in.
