Can you tell if a baby chick is male or female by looking at the pin feathers on their wings?

I was watching TV, at a hatchery, they were sorting the males from the females by looking at their feathers on the tips of their wings. Does anyone know how you can tell male from female by the wings? I thought there was a space in the males wings?

You can with certain breeds & hybrids, but by no means all chicks. Some can only be sexed by examining the vent (and only if you really know what you're looking for, which I don't!)
