What kinds/brands of digital backgrounds should I buy for my portraits?

I was told that I can stop using my tons of backdrops and just shoot a subject up against a gray colored one and then go in and change the background digitally. I'm totally lost. Are these good and do they devalue the picture or will the quality still be good? How do they work and where can I get them? And are they expensive?

I don't know who told you that, but since you already have the backgrounds, you may just be spending more money.

You can do this: Buy a chroma key background or paint for your studios walls and then go out and shoot backgrounds you like (making sure that you can match the lighting of the background with the studio lighting you have).
